The Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner (OCCC) is a state agency dedicated to creating a fair, lawful, and healthy credit environment that grows economic prosperity for all Texans. As part of this mission, the OCCC delivers Financial Education to consumers. Financial Education can provide tools and skills that can help consumers make informed financial decisions. If you want to know more about being financially vigilant, please attend the Avoiding Senior Exploitation seminar presented by the OCCC on Monday, December 16, 2019. A meet and greet will start at 10:30 a.m., followed by a presentation.
Education is key to understanding and knowing the signs of financial exploitation, home ownership scams, managing your finances, and planning for unexpected life events. Senior exploitation is the theft, fraud, misuse of authority, and using influence to leverage control over an older individual’s money or property. Exploitation does not always come from a stranger. One example of financial exploitation could be co-signing on a car loan for a loved one. It can also come in the form of power of attorney abuse, investment fraud, lottery, telephone and internet scams or identity theft.
