HCPD Halloween Safety Tips
BE VISIBLE!! This is by far the most important tip we have for adults and children. Glow in the dark necklaces and bracelets seem to be the go-to for kids, but consider carrying a flashlight for the accompanying adults.
CHOOSE YOUR MASK CAREFULLY! Scary is the goal, but many masks block our peripheral vision. Make sure you can see clearly in low light. Painted faces are the best way to go!
TRAVEL IN GROUPS! Not only is there safety in numbers, but groups of children are easier to see than ones and twos.
WATCH FOR CARS! Most people understand that kids will be darting around and don’t always watch for traffic, but the road is for vehicles. Never assume a car will stop because it is traveling slowly or because there are kids in the area.
KNOW WHERE YOUR KIDS WILL BE! Older kids will likely opt out of trick or treating to go to teen-parties. Know where the party location is, who will be supervising the kids and what sort of supervisor they are. Just because they are a parent, doesn’t make them a responsible parent!
Lastly, BE VIGILANT! Even though it IS the night for strange things, be aware of when something is out of place. People trying door handles on parked cars, teens being vandals and people walking into businesses with masks/costumes on. Don’t be afraid to report it or ask the staff to tell them to take it off!
We will be out in force, make sure to wave and set aside a Snickers for when you see us.
