Basic Firefighter with Paramedic certification or be enrolled in a Paramedic course. Candidate must be within 3 months of eligibility to test for Paramedic certification with the State of Texas or National Registry. Selected candidates must have Paramedic certification within 6 months of hire.

Qualifications & Requirements

Minimum qualifications required to test for position of Firefighter:

  • A valid Texas Driver’s License is required.
  • Basic Firefighter with Paramedic certification or be enrolled in a Paramedic course. Candidate must be within 3 months of being eligible to test for Paramedic certification with the State of Texas or National Registry.
  • Selected candidate must have Paramedic certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Minimum age of applicant is 19 years old.
  • Must have a High School diploma or GED.
  • Must be certified as a Firefighter by the Texas Commission of Fire Protection.
  • An extensive background check will be conducted.

Personal History Statement

A completed Personal History Statement (PHS), linked below, must be turned in prior to the testing date OR brought with you to the testing site on the date of the test. Supporting documents, such as birth certificates or transcripts, can be turned in after the test. You may download the packet from our website and complete it electronically.  Please ensure that all sections that require a signature and/or notarization are completed. Applicants without a completed PHS will not be allowed to test and will be removed from the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

What testing will be done on August 21, 2021?
We will administer the written entrance exam AND the physical fitness test on this date. The physical fitness test consists of a 2,000 meter row on a Concept 2 indoor row machine.
Is there a study guide?

No, there is no official study guide. The test will cover general knowledge topics including, but not limited to: grammar, math, and reading comprehension. The test is not specific to Haltom City and does not require knowledge of police procedures or penal codes.

There are multiple free and paid Civil Service study guides available online and at bookstores; however, none are endorsed by the Haltom City Police Department.

Do I need to bring anything to take the test?
  • You will need to bring a valid government identification card, such as a driver license or Armed Forces ID card.
  • Wear or bring comfortable workout clothing for the physical fitness test.
    • Water, a small towel and a light snack are highly recommended.
    • Water fountains and changing areas will be available for those who wish to utilize them.

Military service members MUST bring a copy of their DD-214 (Member Copy 4) to testing to qualify for the 5 point addition to their score.

Do I need to bring the completed background packets to the test?

No, but it is highly encouraged and will help expedite the background process. You may download the packet below. If you pass the test, you will be handed the background packet and given a deadline to return the completed packet.

When will the physical fitness test be held?

If you pass the written test, you will be escorted to another area to begin the row test. While you may change prior to this, it is recommended you come prepared to conduct the physical assessment. 

 

Parking

Parking is free. Applicants are asked to park in the lot east of the coliseum. Trailers and buses should be parked on this lot as well.
