NE Tarant County Hometown Heroes

a city employee and two volunteers/Board members honored

The 2018 Hometown Heroes Annual Luncheon recently celebrated more than 40 local Hometown Heroes from Northeast Tarrant County at the Bowden Event Center in Keller, Texas on April 19, 2018. Co-hosts, Super Bowl XXX MVP Larry Brown & Channel 8 Meteorologist Colleen Coyle, came out to honor our Hometown Heroes.

2018 ne tarrant chamber hometown heroesHaltom City selected three wonderful people that work tirelessly on behalf of the citizens in Haltom City: David Cummings, Suzanne Norris and Bonnie Richards.

DAVID CUMMINGS

David Cummings (back row, 2nd from right) began his career with the City of Haltom City in June of 1992 as a temporary employee in Building Maintenance. Since then he has held many positions in Public Works. Earlier this year, he was promoted to the Assistant Director of Public Works. He has a “can do” attitude and believes he should perform at the highest level on and off the clock. David was dispatched to a residence because of a potential water leak. Upon arriving to the resident’s property, he quickly saw that the problem was on the resident’s side of the meter. Knowing that the repair wasn’t something the resident was capable of doing and the resident’s income was limited, he went to the hardware store after work and picked up the repair parts. He went back to the resident’s house and fixed the leak on his own time and with money from his own pocket. He has often come to work with his lawn mower because he planned to mow the yards of local senior citizens who needed help. Last year, Haltom City built a new Veteran’s Memorial and David led the City’s personnel (both Public Works staff and Parks Department staff) in setting the rotating globe. He constructed the pool that the globe sits in. He also graded the site around the Memorial platform, installed concrete foundations at each corner of the platform and installed the light poles & lighting on these foundations. The work he and city staff did saved the city approximately $100,000 on the project.

SUZANNE NORRIS

In 2013, Suzanne Norris (front row, on left) was appointed to serve on the Haltom City Fire Services Board. She had already become very active with Haltom City C.E.R.T. and she jumped in with both feet! By the end of the first meeting, she was involved in the department and has not stopped since. She assists with the planning of the Annual Awards Banquet, Annual Open House, and the Junior Fire and Police Camp every summer. She works every city event, including Christmas on Broadway, CARFEST and the Haltom Halloween with the rest of the Fire Services Board by popping popcorn and handing out fire prevention materials. She now serves as the Chairperson for the Fire Services Board and she runs the meetings and keeps everyone in line and on their toes! She is at every HCFD event, but before that event takes place, we are assured that everything and everyone will be where they are supposed to be. Suzanne always asks people to help and she asks people to be involved. Her true passions are God, family and Haltom City Fire Rescue.

BONNIE RICHARDS

haltom road park veterans memorial globeBonnie Richards (front row, in middle) has always wanted a fountain to honor her family in Haltom City. She wanted to recognize all of her family members that served our country. When the Veterans Memorial project was initially discussed, haltom city public library lobbyshe knew Haltom Road Park would be the perfect spot. She and her family donated over $15,000 to purchase the globe fountain (pictured at right) at the Veterans Memorial. It was a tremendous gift to the city that will be here as a reminder of not only her family’s sacrifice to our country, but their dedication and continued support of our community. Bonnie has been on the Haltom City Library Board for 15 years and she donated the first public statue (pictured left) in the City to the Library in honor of her late husband Jake Richards, as well as memorial trees at both the Library and the Recreation Center in his honor. She is a member of the Friends of the Haltom City Public Library and the Haltom City Garden Club. She is an active member of St. Luke Methodist Church, is treasurer of the United Methodist Women, a teacher of VBS and taught at the church’s popular ESL program.

Thank you to David, Suzanne and Bonnie for their continued involvement in our City and their outstanding examples of community engagement and leadership. Haltom City is a much better place to both live in and work for because of them.
