Seniors Sought for SAGE Program

haltom city senior center sage programThe Seniors Assisting in Geriatric Education (SAGE) Program at University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) and Texas Christian University (TCU) pairs students in medical fields with active adults, 60 years of age and older, providing an opportunity for future healthcare providers to learn more about communicating with older adults by practicing basic clinical skills in taking medical histories, interviewing, conducting physical exams, taking medication & cognitive assessments, and advising on nutrition. Students will not give medical advice.

How SAGE Works

Student teams consisting of 3-4 students will be paired with an adult 60 years of age or older in the Fort Worth Area. The teams will contact the senior and schedule visits six times over a two year period. The visits last between 1 to 1.5 hours and include the students taking the seniors vital signs. A free Vial Life is provided for each senior participating in the program. Senior volunteers will have the opportunity to positively influence the ability of these future providers to care for seniors in a sensitive and compassionate way. We are constantly in need of new volunteer seniors to participate in the program. Currently, we have over 1300 health care profession students participating in the program, which means we need over 600 seniors to participate in the program at all times.

If you would like to sign up for this program contact Yolanda Lane, Academic Coordinator for SAGE, at 817-735-0289. A copy of the consent form, with additional information, can be downloaded here.
