Test Your Smoke Alarms

haltom city fire rescue smoke alarmsThe Haltom City Fire/Rescue Department reminds you that every bedroom in your house needs a working smoke alarm. Half of home fire deaths happen between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., when most people are asleep. Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. Larger homes may need more alarms.

For the best protection, install interconnected smoke alarms in your home. This way, when one sounds, they all sound.

Be sure to test alarms at least once a month by pushing the alarm's test button. Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 year sold or if they do not sound when tested. Some people, especially children and older adults, may need help to wak up. Make sure it is someone's responsibility tol wake them if the smoke alarm sounds.

If your alarm does go off, get outside and stay outside. Meet all inhabitants at a predetermined meeting place outside of your home. Call the fire department from a cellphone or a neighbor’s phone, and stay outside until the fire department says it’s safe to go back inside.
