$182,000 Raised for HC Students

Parks and Rec Gives Out 825 Backpacks at This Year’s Back to School Health Fair

2017 haltom city bisd back to school health fairOn July 29th, the Haltom City Parks and Recreation Department (HCPRD) hosted their 8th annual Back to School Health Fair at Haltom High School. Every Haltom City elementary and middle school student was invited to this event, where they could receive a free vision screening, a free keepsake family photo, a free haircut, a free backpack, free school supplies, as well as access to all the health information from 30 vendors and sponsors. This year we saw our largest crowd ever, as 1,300 residents attended and 825 students picked up their new backpack and school supplies. The remaining backpacks and school supply packs were given to the Birdville Council of PTAs to distribute to Haltom City students who were unable to attend the Health Fair.

Christi Pruitt, Haltom City Parks and Recreation Director, said “this was our biggest turnout ever and we had a great response from vendors and community partners. It’s such a privilege to be able to give back to the students and families of our community in this way. I am so grateful we are able to raise the funds to support our local students on their educational path successfully.”

HCPRD recognized the financial needs of Haltom City families with all seven of their elementary schools designated as Title 1 campuses and 80% of their students on free and reduced lunch programs. They raised over $27,000 for this year’s Health Fair, and have raised approximately $182,000 over the eight years since they began the program. The Haltom Stampede, CARFEST and the Mayor’s Cup Golf Tournament are the three annual fundraising events they host to raise all the money that assists the local students and families at the Health Fair.

Special thanks to our sponsors for this year’s fair: Amerigroup, Frost Bank, Waste Connections, Birdville Baptist Church & Northeast Ministries, and Five Star Ford. A very special thanks to the Haltom City Police Department for purchasing the 900 backpacks for this year’s event. We would also like to thank the local business sponsors, non-profit agencies, civic groups, local churches and volunteers that make this event possible.
