Safe Routes to School Sidewalks
Construction of new sidewalks near three BISD schools in Haltom City began in late 2013 and, when completed, will improve the safety of students walking and biking to school. Funded by a grant from Safe Routes to Schools, a federally funded program administered by TxDOT, the 7.6 miles of sidewalk construction will also result in improved crossings at railroad tracks and streets.
Schools involved include North Oaks Middle, Haltom Middle and the Academy at West Birdville. Phase I construction began near North Oaks along Haltom Road and Springlake Parkway. It has continued south along Haltom Road and includes sidewalks on several other secondary streets.
The grant totals $1.2 million, and construction is expected to be complete in the summer of 2014.
