Apply for Position on a Board/Commission

One way for Haltom City citizens to actively participate in local government is to become involved as a member of a board or commission.

All members of these active groups are volunteers whose charge it is to make decisions and advise the City Council on several issues from expenditure of public funds to zoning questions. The Haltom City Charter and ordinances authenticate the existence of each board or commission and establishes them as legal arms of city government. All board or commission members are residents who, after filling out an application form (online version here), are appointed by Council members and/or the Mayor. Most boards or commissions meet on a monthly basis and members are expected to attend all meetings unless specific circumstances arise. Members who miss three (3) meetings in a one-year period may be asked to resign.

Qualifications for Appointment

The Haltom City Code of Ordinances establishes that persons who have resided in the City for at least twelve (12) months shall be considered for appointment to City boards and commissions unless otherwise provided in the Code.

Selection Process

Nominations to boards and commissions, unless otherwise provided by the Charter or the Code of Ordinances, shall be made by the Council member who serves in the corresponding place on the City Council. The Mayor also nominates members to serve on a board or commission. The City Council shall confirm nominations for appointment to the board or commission in order for an appointment to be effective. Nominations are made in May of each year and as vacant positions need to be filled.

Each member shall serve for a term of office to commence upon the date of appointment by the City Council and to continue for a term coexistent with the term of office of the Council member who made the nomination, and until the board member's successor is appointed and qualified.

Please contact the City Secretary's office if you have any questions at 817 222-7749. You may also submit an application in person or via mail to the City Secretary's office, which is located at 5024 Broadway Ave, Haltom City, TX 76117.
