The Haltom City Police Department is very proud of the acquisition of a K9 team. Purchased in September of 2003 with Local Law Enforcement Block Grant funds, the team consists of Corporal Tom Myers whose partner is a Belgian Malinois named Bruno(below) and Officer Banning Sweatland, who is partnered with a Black Labrador named Mary Jane. Each handler completed an extremely demanding twelve-week training course.
Bruno is a dual-purpose dog certified in narcotics as well as patrol tactics and tracking. He is used for tracking people, checking buildings and recovering evidence. Mary Jane is certified in narcotics and tracking and is also capable of evidence recovery.
The dogs are sometimes used to assist other area agencies that do not have K9 units. They are also available to make appearances at schools or special community events where the officers often conduct a demonstration of their applications.
If you would like to schedule an appearance by the K9 Unit, or if you have information regarding possible drug traffic in your neighborhood, you can contact Corporal Tom Myers via email at tmyers@haltomcitytx.com, or Officer Banning Sweatland at bsweatland@haltomcitytx.com.
