Sandy Oaks Park Adds Walking Trail, Landscaping

(HC-9/18/09) On Wednesday, September 16th, Haltom City dedicated its renovated Seniors Park while also celebrating the official grand opening of the quarter-mile Sandy Oaks Walking Trail. The area is the first park dedicated to senior citizens in Haltom City.

The ceremony was held at 7PM at the trailhead, which is located next to the Haltom City Senior Center, 5000 Bernice Street. The ceremony featured remarks by Haltom City Mayor Bill Lanford and dedication of a bronze plaque commemorating the event and the contribution of volunteer time and labor by members of the Colleyville Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

The project transformed a six-acre site into the walking trail and park, as well as provided improvements to an adjacent baseball field and children’s playground. Over 2500 man hours of labor were performed in just two days in April by Church volunteers. In all, the project involved about 300 teen and adult volunteers from congregations in Bedford, Colleyville, Euless, Grapevine, Keller, Roanoke, Southlake and Trophy Club.

The volunteers cut and poured concrete through a quarter-mile walking path on land north of and behind the Senior Center. Following the initial development, the path received landscaping, tables and improvements were made to exterior restrooms adjacent to the walkway. Work crews also landscaped the infield and outfield areas on the ballpark and refinished two dugouts. In addition, volunteers repainted children’s play equipment and cleaned up the children’s play area adjacent to the baseball field. Total value of the improvements and work are estimated at approximately $65,000.

In July of this year 50 youth and adults from NorthWood Church in Keller provided an additional 1,200 man hours of work landscaping and beautifying the park. Their efforts and contribution will be recognized at the ceremony as well.
